Former Bradwell Institute star Sheldon Barnes won the most valuable offensive player award at the annual Savannah State University athletic banquet April 13 in Tiger Arena.
Barnes, a running back, said he was shocked to get the award.
“I was surprised,” he said. “It was a close vote between me and my good friend Simon Heyward. Getting this award will help me build confidence for next year and my expectations will be higher.”
As a freshman, Barnes played in 11 games and led the Tigers in rushing with 563 yards and four touchdowns. Barnes’ best game came during SSU’s 28-21 victory over North Carolina Central, when he ran for a career-high 120 yards on 19 carries. He rushed for 109 yards in a loss at Florida A&M.
