The 15U Coastal Crew Rebels were a bit starstruck after having the opportunity to meet and mingle with NBA star Chris Paul at the 2011 Nike Memorial Day Classic in Suwanee last weekend.
Rebels coach Ernie Walthour said there were a few NBA players present at the tournament, but Paul, who plays for the New Orleans Hornets, came up to his squad and really impressed the kids.
“They shook his hand, talked to him, sat next to him and they couldn’t keep their eyes off him,” Walthour said. “Paul owns the CP3 team out of North Carolina that played in the tournament. He is completely down-to-earth, very humble and the kids had a really good weekend.
The Rebels finished 2-2 in the tourney, beating both the Florida Elite and tournament-host Georgia Stars.
“Miguel Pineda had a great tournament,” Walthour said. “Trey Brown Scott did a great job for us on rebounds and shot blocking the entire weekend.”
Walthour said the trip would not have been possible without sponsors M&M Motors, Osteen and Osteen Law Firm, the St. James Sports Center, Melissa Ray Carter of State Farm Insurance and Linda Shuman of Fort Stewart.

The 15-17U boys are gearing up for the National tournament coming up in July in Orlando. Walthour said it’s the first time three Rebel squads will be making the trip to Orlando at the same time.

“We are taking 45 players to Orlando for eight days,” he said.
