Trail celebrates oak tree

Walking tours set for Saturday

POSTED: September 23, 2007 5:03 a.m.
A set of guided tours providing a look at special re-enactments will take place at Melon Bluff Nature Center near Midway this weekend.
Join the guided tours departing at 11:30, 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 Saturday from the center. No reservations are required. Admission is $3 per person and free for those under the age of 12.
The trail is not appropriate for strollers, so parents of very young children should be prepared to carry them.
Opened on Georgia Arbor Day 2007, this interpretive trail features an easy 1.5-mile loop through the maritime forest and along the marsh edge. Learn about the time when the Southern live oak (quercus virginiana) was the most valuable tree in the world and shaped the fate of the brand new nation of the United States.
Visit the Treetop Viewing Platform that rises 45 feet above the marshes of the North Newport River, overlooking Hampton Island. The trail is open during regular hours and for group tours with advance reservations.
