Honor Flight seeks vets, volunteers

POSTED: June 27, 2011 10:33 a.m.

Honor Flight Savannah is seeking veterans who want to take the organization’s upcoming fall trips and is recruiting volunteers, known as guardians, to help chaperone aging veterans.

The local Honor Flight chapter serves elderly and infirm veterans, most of whom fought in World War II and the Korean War and are residents of Coastal Georgia and South Carolina.

The chapter offers them a free trip to the nation’s capital to visit war memorials and Arlington National Cemetery.

Veterans who take the next trip, scheduled for Sept. 9-11, will travel by deluxe double-decker motor coach. The point of departure and return is the 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard on Dean Forest Road in Savannah.

The second fall trip is scheduled for Oct. 21-22. Veterans will fly out of Charleston, S.C., and stay overnight in Baltimore, Md., before visiting Washington, D.C.

Guardians must complete training before participating in any trips. The next training will be from 11 a.m.-noon Aug. 13 at the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum at 175 Bourne Ave. in Pooler. A makeup training day will be Sept. 17 for the October trip.
