Five people were injured in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon in Liberty County.

The accident occurred on Highway 196 near Dairy Road shortly before 6 p.m. Dustin Bishop, 26, of Long County was traveling toward Hinesville in his 1999 Chevy Silverado pickup truck and allegedly drifted into the westbound lane while negotiating a curve, striking an oncoming vehicle, Georgia State Patrol Trooper William Bowman said.

Renae Laurent Jackson, 32, of Collins, Ga., was traveling in the eastbound lane with her mother, Bessie Danette Laurent, 49, and her two children, 11-year-old Willie Laurent and 6-year-old Nicola Costen, when Bishop’s vehicle allegedly struck her vehicle on the front left of her 2004 Chevy Impala. Bowman said the impact sent the Impala spinning around several times before it came to rest on the side of the road. Bishop’s vehicle continued on for 10 feet before it came to a full stop on the eastbound lane.

Bishop suffered extensive injuries to the lower part of his body. Jackson had gashes to her legs and may have suffered a broken pelvis.

The occupants of both vehicles were transported by ground to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Bishop is listed in critical condition, Jackson in stable condition, Bessie Laurent in fair condition and both children were treated and released Tuesday evening.

The accident is under investigation, Bowman said, and charges are pending.
