Scott’s All-Stars held their second annual awards banquet July 22 to honor the players’ academic and athletic accomplishments.
“We are very proud that all our kids had above a B average,” All-Stars founder Marcus Scott said. “It is rare to have any program where all students’ grades were above a B average throughout the year. Our combined program GPA was an 87. We are also proud that we had nine kids that maintained an A average.”
Lady Tigers basketball coach Faye Baker spoke at the banquet. She praised the program for being about more than just athletics and having an academic focus. She encouraged the kids to practice as hard in the classroom as they do on the basketball court.
Baker told the youngsters how difficult it could be getting into college and advised them to work hard to defy the odds. She explained the importance of education and having a backup plan other than the NBA.
“If your goal is to go to the NBA, you still need to have a but-what-if attitude, meaning but what if that does not happen, then what is the alternative,” she said.
The All-Stars thanked photographer Dee Frasier and emcee Hermon Scott.
