A 58-year-old Hinesville man died Monday after his motorcycle collided with a sports utility vehicle during mid-morning traffic.
Dwight Henry Emmons Sr. was traveling southbound on Gen. Screven Way near Arby’s in Hinesville as 43-year-old Kyong Choi was exiting the Hinesville Square parking lot just before 10:30 a.m., according to Hinesville Police Traffic Accident Investigator Lt. Max McLendon.
McLendon said Choi, a Midway resident, was attempting to merge the gold 2001 Jeep Cherokee she was driving into Emmons’ lane when he applied the breaks of the 2007 Yamaha 1300 motorcycle and lost control. The motorcycle then slammed into the rear of the SUV.
Witnesses said Emmons received medical assistance from emergency workers before being taken to Liberty Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
A former U.S. marine and Vietnam War veteran, Emmons was a native of New York, but lived in Hinesville for the past year and a half. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion in Savannah.
The motorcycle enthusiast is survived by his wife, Emma, two sons, one stepson and one stepdaughter.
The wreck is currently under investigation, McLendon said.
