September busy at Dorchester Village

POSTED: August 23, 2011 3:30 p.m.

The Dorchester Village Civic Center in Midway will host special events in the next few months in its newly renovated building.
The first event is a fish fry from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 15.
“We have a group of ‘old salts’ who do a fantastic job of frying the fish and hush puppies, and we have repeat customers who wouldn’t miss it,” DVCC Secretary Julie Martin said. “Besides the fish, the dinners have coleslaw, baked beans, dessert and tea.”
Dine-in and take-home options are available. Delivery is offered for dinner orders of 10 or more.
The next event is an open house from 2-4 p.m. Sept. 18 to show off the newly renovated building. The event will serve as a thank-you for the volunteers who donated their time and money to help rebuild and renovate the building. The entire building was renovated through the use of donations and volunteer work.
“We would love for people who have never been to the DVCC before to come take a look around and see what we have to offer,” Martin said.
The DVCC will host a haunted house Oct. 21-22 and 28-29 for people of all ages.
Volunteers are needed to help plan, decorate and work the event.
“The haunted house is something new, and we’re very excited about it,” Martin said. “We’re in the planning stages now and welcome any and all help.”
Some people consider the DVCC to be haunted. Several members of the community and DVCC board have reported sightings of paranormal activity, so this Halloween’s haunted house adventure could be a bit more realistic than expected.
The Dorchester Village Civic Center building is an old schoolhouse, built in 1938, and has been renovated in recent years. Residents can rent individual rooms or the entire building to host events. At 7,400 square feet, it holds an auditorium, five classrooms and a kitchen, along with an outdoor pavilion and plenty of parking.
It is located about two miles off I-95 heading toward Sunbury on Islands Highway.
