Gary Tabb, 55, owner of The Pizza Peddler in Midway and two pawnshops, died Monday morning when he was hit on I-95 near Brunswick.

Family and friends are remembering him, besides as a successful businessman, as a devoted family man.

“He loved life and was a people person,” his obituary says.

The Georgia State Patrol reported that Tabb had stopped his Chevy pickup on the shoulder of the northbound lanes of the interstate and apparently was attempting to cross the three-lane highway to retrieve a vehicle bumper, according to witnesses.

As Tabb was crossing the highway, Gerald Franklin, 60, of Jacksonville, struck Tabb with his northbound pickup in the center lane around 10:15 a.m., throwing him into the median. Tabb was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges will be filed against the driver.

Tabb is survived by his wife, Kim Tabb of Midway, three children and four grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel.
