After putting a 41-6 whipping on Brantley County last week, Class A powerhouse Charlton County comes to Olvey Field tonight to face Bradwell Institute.
The Tigers hope to bounce back from last week’s 27-2 loss to Brunswick but will face a challenge in the No. 10-ranked Indians, who can list four state titles and three runner-up finishes on their resume.
Tigers coach Jim Walsh Jr. said Charlton County has what he considers one of the top backs in South Georgia in Tre Hamilton, who while not very tall is very shifty and fast.
A senior, Hamilton has rushed for more than 3,000 yards in his career to date.
Walsh anticipates the Indians will do a great bit of running and said the front line will be big.
“Defensively, Charlton is going to run a 4-4 or a 3-5 and be very multiple,” he said, noting the Tigers were their own worst enemies at times last week.
“We gave 17 points up in the kicking game,” he said. “We had two fumbles that were very costly to us. In the second quarter we muffed a punt and we fumbled a short kickoff, and that ended up leaving our defense out on the field for a long time. We didn’t get to touch the ball a whole lot in the second
quarter.
“We felt like we executed well (offensively) against Liberty in the scrimmage and it’s almost like we took a step back in the Glynn game.”
Walsh said the game against Glynn and tonight’s game against Charlton matter, but more importantly they are tools to iron out the kinks before they get to Region 3-AAAAA play.
“We have to get everything ironed out now, because once we get into region play, it counts,” he said. “Our kids know that every game counts, but those first two don’t help us or hurt us for the post-
season.”
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
