Tonight, winless Long County High School (0-3) travels to Darien to take on McIntosh County Academy.
In years past, the team from Darien usually was the clear-cut favorite when it took on the Blue Tide, but this season may be a little different.
The Buccaneers come into tonight’s contest still looking for their first win of the year. In the three games that they have played, they have been outscored, 93-7, by opponents Savannah Christian, Liberty County and Glynn Academy.
But even though coach Keith Gosse’s team may appear to be down-and-out, if there is one team in Region 2-AA whose number MCA has had in recent years, it is Long County’s.
In seven games against McIntosh County, the Blue Tide never have come close to notching a win, with the closest game being in 2006 when the Bucs won the contest, 31-0.
Last year, the Buccaneers won, 40-7.
This year, however, the Blue Tide are playing better football than they have in recent years. Though still winless, Long County easily could be 2-1.
In their first game against Bryan County (3-0), the Tide lost by a touchdown with seconds left to play, and in their second game against Southeast Bulloch (1-2), they lost in overtime.
Even in last week’s 50-14 loss to Wayne County, the Blue Tide were able to move the ball against the Yellow Jackets, and turnovers cost Long County at least 14 points.
But if the Blue Tide are going to have a chance against McIntosh, the team will need another stellar performance by Week 3 player of the week Jeffery Hall.
Last week against the Yellow Jackets, the senior had 10 tackles and was a force all over the field.
The game is at 7:30 p.m. in Darien.
