Remains of fire victims still unidentified

POSTED: October 27, 2007 5:01 a.m.
The bodies of three people discovered in the smoldering rubble of an early morning fire Oct 4, have yet to be positively identified.
The Hinesville Fire Department arrived at the scene in the 200 block of Live Oak Church Road at 7:41 a.m. only to find the singlewide mobile home had burned to its foundation. All that remained was to extinguish some of the hot spots.
The bodies were discovered during the cleanup and initial fire investigation. The remains were so badly burned their gender and identities could not be determined.
Liberty County Fire coordinator James Ashdown said the cause of the fire is undeterminable and that arson was not suspected.
The bodies were sent to the GBI lab where DNA testing is being done to positively identify the three individuals who were found.
Ashdown said it would likely take three to four weeks to get the results of the DNA tests.
It was apparent the house had burned for several hours before the fire department was notified.
Ashdown believes the fire went undetected because the home could not be seen from the main road.
Authorities reported two of the bodies were found in the rear bedroom and the third near the front door of the mobile home.
Neighbors said a middle-aged couple was renting the home at the time of the fire and had moved in about eight months earlier.
