First Presbyterian made a mark during its first year with a varsity boys basketball team. With sheer determination, this young team went out and impressed the crowd and the coaches.
“Look how far we’ve come,” assistant coach David Linderman said.
The Highlanders enter regional tournament play as the sixth seed but finished third with a victory over Providence Christian Academy, 68-57.
The team is motivated and determined to move forward. The team is made up of underclassmen, as FPCA only goes up to the tenth grade now.
“We always knew that we had the potential to be the leaders in Liberty County,” coach Darrell West said. “Even if it’s only our first year.”
FPCA is the last team from Liberty County headed to a state tourney and players and coaches say they are determined to bring back the gold. The players have lived by belief in God, self, team, hard work and dedication, according to Headmaster Reggie Burgess.
“The discipline that these players live by is what makes this Highlander team extra ordinary,” he said.
Leading the team to victory in the regional playoffs was sophomore Terrence Alston II with 22 points followed by freshmen Michael Brown with 17 points. The other Highlander scores came from sophomore Joey Bell with 16 Points and 10 rebounds, sophomore Josh Rodgers with 10 points and freshmen Hakeem Golden with 10 rebounds.
The spotlight player for the night was Josh Rodgers. He brought excitement and endless energy to the game with defense and rebounding abilities. The coaches said his desire to play ignited energy with the other players.
The Highlanders head to state play next Thursday at 4 p.m. at East Georgia College in Swainsboro.
