If the past three years are any indication, tonight’s game featuring the Liberty  County Panthers at Glynn Academy likely will come down to the wire.
The Red Terrors are 3-0 against the Panthers, but their widest margin of victory was only four points. And after having a winning touchdown wiped away for a penalty, it’s more than likely the Panthers are going to fight for every inch to get the win they felt they deserved last week against Wayne County.
They are hungry and the stats show it.
The Panthers have 15 defenders in the double digits with total tackles. Raekwon McMillan is eight tackles shy of hitting 100 for the season. Melvin King, Anthony Dabson, Tay Tay Bacon, Javious James and Cory Lazenby have tallied 60, 54, 48, 45 and 41 respectively. Dabson has proven to be a threat to opposing quarterbacks, earning seven sacks for 42 yards. He caused three fumbles and recovered three fumbles to date. Rodney Goffney is a danger to the Red Terrors’ aerial attack. He has nabbed two interceptions for 20 yards and also has blocked two punts.
But the Panther who seems to have the biggest appetite is senior running back Shadrach Thornton. Last week against Wayne County, Thornton fielded a punt on the bounce in his own territory and raced downfield for what would have been the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. The referees called a holding penalty around midfield, and Thornton’s run was called back. Wayne County held on for a 21-20 win.
Thornton had 25 carries for 157 yards against Wayne County, bringing him to 1,357 yards on 194 carries so far this season. He is 36 yards shy of hitting 4,000 for his high school career.

For the season, JJ Grant is 19-of-41 passing for 251 yards and a touchdown. Thornton is 9 of 32 for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Paris Boles has seven receptions for 100 yards, Alton Sapp has 11 receptions for 133 yards, Sam Carter has three for 79 yards and Thornton has six for 58 yards.
Thornton has nine kickoff returns for 220 yards. Carter has one return for 20 and Bacon has nine for 258 yards.
Liberty County is 2-6 overall and 0-4 in Region 2A-AAAA. Glynn Academy is 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the region.
Liberty County will play Effingham County on Nov. 4 in a subregion game.
