The Tigers played tough defense against Groves High on Friday night at Olvey Field. But Juwan Johnson found just enough daylight to score on a 4-yard run late in the second quarter, and that gave the Rebels all points they needed in a 6-0 win over Bradwell Institute.
The Tiger defense held Johnson to 87 yards on 17 carries for the night and only one reception for nine yards.
The Tigers also kept pressure on Rebel quarterback Benjamin Scott, who completed only 3 of 7 passes for 12 yards.  When the Rebels looked to run, quarterback Jessie Robbins stepped into the game, but the Tiger defense saw it coming and on five attempts Robbins was pushed back 10 yards.
Scott didn’t have much luck rushing either; the Tigers pushed him back 4 yards.
The Tigers had a few opportunities to gain the lead. On two separate occasions receivers had the ball at their fingertips but couldn’t hold on for the catch in the end zone.
In addition, Myrese Cobb hit Markell McKee with a pass with 1.2 seconds left before halftime. McKee made the catch on the sideline, spun to avoid a defender but stepped out of bounds at the Rebels’ 2-yard line.
Groves had additional scoring opportunities as well. In the third quarter, Tiger Quonte Haggray coughed up the football and the Rebels had it on the Tigers’ 15. The Rebels made it to the 6, but the Tiger defense stuffed the run and took over on downs.
Rebels Jerry Davis and Janard Coney picked off a pass each to ending BI possessions.
The Tigers finished the season 1-9 overall and 1-7 in Region 3-AAAAA. Groves ended 6-3 overall and 4-3 for the region. They face Benedictine next.
