United Way nears campaign goal

POSTED: November 14, 2011 3:30 p.m.

With just days remaining in the 2011-12 “Live United” fundraising campaign, the United Way had raised $168,462, or 93 percent of this year’s goal of $181,000. The campaign ends Nov. 18.
United Way funds are used for the operating budget for the coming year for agencies served in Liberty County, with 100 percent of the money raised staying in the county.
Administrative costs for United Way staff are paid from an endowment, according to area Director Jennifer Darsey.
As a result, almost all of every dollar donated goes to serve others in the community.
According to campaign organizers, this year’s success could not have been achieved without the support of the entire Liberty County community — individuals, businesses, city and county government agencies and organizations.
By supporting the United Way with donations and volunteerism, the combined strength of donors sustains individuals, families and the community as a whole, campaign organizers said.
The support provides for programs and services in areas of education and youth development, economic independence, health and wellness, and basic human needs.
Donations support a network of more than 120 programs that provide services to in-need single parents, victims of domestic violence, youth at risk, the elderly, the mentally and physically challenged and more.
