For nearly 30 minutes Friday night, Bradwell Institute controlled the game, the pace and held the lead against unbeaten Johnson. But the visiting Atomsmashers outscored the Tigers’ 18-8 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 55-50 win and stay unbeaten in Region 3-AAAAA.
Led by the scoring of Dazjon Tinae and Miguel Pineda, BI led 42-37 at the end of three quarters.  Tinae finished with 16 points and Pineda had 10 for the Tigers.
But Atomsmasher Tim Quarterman hit nine of his 18 points in the fourth period to give Johnson its first lead of the game, a 45-42 advantage with 6:29 left to play. They held the lead the rest of the game — though  the Tigers answered point for point and steal for steal.
Then, with just a three-point lead, Johnson brought the game to a standstill and took nearly two minutes off the clock before the visiting team hit four layups to the Tigers’ three and led 53-48 with 1:33 left in the game.
Pineda, who already hit two shots from outside the 3-point line, was set up on the perimeter. Tiger Javante Richey charged the lane and, while looking toward the inside, passed the ball to Pineda in a swift motion. Pineda made the shot to bring the Tigers within 53-50.
Tiger coach Pete Woodard called for a timeout to discuss strategy with 23.1 seconds left. The Tigers lined up and were set to receive the ball inbounds, but a Johnson player tipped the pass and players scrambled for the ball as it rolled out of bounds. The Tigers got the toss in with 8.8 seconds, but the Atomsmashers  stole the ball and sank a final layup at the buzzer.
The Tigers travel to Kingsland next week to take on Camden County High School in another region game.
