The Long County High School boys’ basketball team won its first Region 2-AA game of the season Saturday  with a 67-56 victory over Appling County in Baxley.
Blue Tide coach Deshon Brock said the win was an important one.
“It was a big win in the sense that we were already down 0-1 in the region with the loss to Vidalia on Friday,” Brock said. “We came out a little slow Saturday but were able to pick it up in the second quarter and hold on for the double-digit win.”
Brock said he was pleased with the way his team moved the ball against the Indians, but he added that there is plenty of room for  improvement.
“We have to continue to get better on the defensive glass — that is one area where we struggle,” he said.
Brock highlighted the individual efforts of a few of the players: Vanda Vareen, Josh Berry and Kalope McRae, who contributed quality play coming off the bench.
Brock also was pleased with the defensive play of Johnnae Jones, who blocked four shots while grabbing 10 rebounds.
“Johnnae Jones altered a lot of shots,” he said. “His presence inside was big for us.”
The coach also praised the all-around play of Jamaal Anderson and Henry Peoples.  Anderson led all scorers with 23 points and had eight rebounds, while Peoples put up 13 points and had 10 rebounds.
With Saturday’s win, the Blue Tide improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the region. They took on Jeff Davis on Tuesday night.
Long County plays at Toombs County on Friday and McIntosh County on Saturday in Ludowici. The girls’ games tip off at 6 p.m., and the boys’ games follow.
“These three games are all must-wins if we have any hope at getting the No. 1 seed,” Brock said.
