Long boys win third straight

Lady Blue Tide remain winless

Playing in Lyons, the Long County High School boys’ basketball team picked up its third win in a row Friday with a 67-56 victory over Toombs County.
The Blue Tide ran out to a 22-10 first-quarter lead over the Bulldogs, but Toombs County fought back and narrowed the score to 34-27 at halftime.
Long County managed to hold off the Bulldogs in the second half to improve to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in Region 2-AA.
Henry Peoples and Jamel Anderson led the Blue Tide with 14 points each.
Also putting up respectable numbers for Long County were Josh Berry with 12 points, Chris LaRochester with nine points and Johnnae Jones, who finished with eight points. Toombs County’s Tomond Hampton had a game-high 26 points.
Toombs County fell to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the region.
In the girls’ game, winless Long County (0-9, 0-5) battled winless Toombs County before falling, 44-30.
Long County led, 21-20, at halftime, but the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Tide, 8-2,  in the third quarter to take a 28-23 lead into the final period.  In the fourth period, the Long County girls continued to struggle and were outscored, 16-7.
Jameka Boyd  led Long County with 10 points. Brittany Hall added seven points, Mikayla Lovett chipped in five points and Vontay Turner scored four points for the Lady Tide. Raven Rose and Amondah Garvin each had a bucket. 
Toombs County’s Courtney Wynn scored 16 points.
