Hey all the good folks of Liberty County and surrounding area, The Dock Tour starts this weekend. I hope I'll have something to tell you about next week.
There are still some reports from Yellow Bluff Marina about sheepshead being caught out at the Cat Bouy. Also some reports out of Chatham County from the kayak fishermen, saying they were catching trout on artificial bait. Their bait of choice was gulp swimming mullet.
They also mentioned that all the trout were caught in six- to eight-foot, moving water. So that is good to hear no matter what the bait may be.
There was a fishing tournament out of Coffee Bluff Marina. It was a sheepshead tourney and the biggest fish was landed by Jimmy Bostick. It weighed in 10 pounds 10 ounces. They were fishing at an offshore reef. The team weighed five fish that totaled 41 pounds.
My friends, that is, sure enough, some sheepshead.
Now here is a little freshwater news. Tattnall Shrine Club is having a crappie tournament on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 12:01 a.m.-2 p.m. All fish must be weighed in by 3. It will be at the Tattnall Shrine-Club on the Glennville-Reidsville Highway. For more information, call Jay Kicklighter at 912-237-2551.
I talked to Capt. Jerry Allen`s daughter Ashley this week and she told me that they were really catching a lot of crab. That’s good news.
I also talked to my friend Stan Cain who used to charter fish out of Yellow Bluff. He told me about a recipe his mom cooked when he was a kid. I would like to share it with you and maybe you can try it will your watching the Super Bowl this evening. Or try it because you like to eat crab.
Take the crab, clean them and then boil them. After they have cooled down, back them and clean the insides out. Turn the oven on 350⁰ to pre-heat. Season the crabs with olive oil and garlic cloves, salt and pepper and, just for my liking, rub on a little Johnny Harris`s mustard BBQ sauce.
Line them up on a baking sheet and slide those babies into the oven for about an hour. Then grab the paper towels and I am sure you can find a tasty beverage in the cooler or the fridge that would go right along with the fare.
Give it a try. You can mix your own spices. Let me know how it comes out.
Now, if you need bait, Yellow Bluff has live shrimp and minnows and maybe will have some fiddlers by the weekend. Sunbury Crab Company has live minnows and frozen shrimp and squid. Halfmoon has live shrimp. The Midway Feed and Supply has frozen saltwater bait and they also carry a variety of freshwater bait and tackle.
So, until next week, remember what Old Tight Line always said. Get out there and go fishing and if you do remember to keep a tight line. I say hit the dock and keep a sharp eye and watch that cork go down.
