Lewis Frasier Middle School launched a 50-day health challenge Feb. 3.

Staff members participating in the challenge were measured for weight and body mass index at the beginning of the competition and will have weekly weigh-ins. The results will be registered on the USDA’s website, www.choosemyplate.org.

Participants will earn points based on how many times they exercise and how many days they stay within their recommended calorie range.

Forty-two of the school’s 82 staffers have registered for the competition so far. The hallways will compete against each other to see who will have the healthiest staff at the end of the competition.

The winning hallway will get a healthy lunch at the midway mark and at the end. Participants also will earn points by attending the Wellness Festival for all Liberty County Board of Education employees on March 16, and getting diabetes, blood sugar and blood pressure screenings, among other activities.

The challenge launch coincided with the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day to bring attention to heart disease. Students and staff wore red to participate in the initiative.
