Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield will host its its biannual cemetery and historical site tour from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 15 to several of the cemeteries on the installation.
The tour is by bus to Thomas Hill Cemetery, Rimes Cemetery, Strum Bay (also called Stewart Town Cemetery), and Warnell Cemetery.
A bus will pick up attendees from Liberty and Long counties at the Hinesville Georgia Army National Guard Armory on U.S. Highway 84, 9 a.m., and take attendees to the Fort Stewart pass and permit office for registration.
Bryan, Tattnall, Wayne and Chatham county attendees should go directly to the Fort Stewart pass and permit office, Building 8093 on Highway 144 to register. Maps are available.
Lunch is $3.65 per person and will be at the Vanguard Dining Facility on post. Reservations are needed for lunch.
The site visit is a cooperative effort between Fort Stewart officials and community members who have family ties to the cemeteries on the installation. Fort Stewart has more than 60 cemeteries. The council provides an interchange on issues relating to the cemeteries and allows former residents of the area to gather and visit with one another and recall the history from that time period. Other community groups from area churches, schools, colleges, clubs and senior citizens organizations are encouraged to participate in this event.
The public is invited to participate in the visit. Please call the Public Affairs Office by Nov. 13 at (912) 767-5687 or (912) 767-1145 to confirm attendance. Registration for the tour will begin at 9 a.m. at the pass and permit office.
