Six Blue Tide make boys’ all-region team

POSTED: February 24, 2012 10:11 a.m.

The Long County boys’ basketball team led all area teams with six players selected for the Region 2-AA all-region team.
The Blue Tide, who open state tourney play at 4 p.m. Saturday in Ludowici, led all area teams in the number of all-region picks
Blue Tide senior Henry Peoples and junior Jamaal Anderson were selected to the first team, while senior Jarquez Payne and junior Chris LaRochester were named to the second team. Senior Johnnae Jones and junior Josh Berry received honorable mention status.
Vidalia High School has the next-most all-region selections with five. Vidalia’s Devin Atkins was named the region’s player of the year.
Blue Tide head coach Deshon Brock was proud of the selections.
“This is a testament to their hard work, dedication and sacrifice,” he said. “Last year, we didn’t have anyone receive anything, and then this year, we have six guys make the list. That’s great for our program.”
The Lady Tide also were represented on the all-region team. Juniors Raven Rose and Brittany Hall got honorable mentions.  Keamoney Locke of Jeff Davis High School was the girl’s region player of the year.
On Saturday, the Blue Tide boys are back on the court for the first round of the state playoffs.  Long County (18-8), which is the No. 2 seed in their bracket, faces a tough Early County team that brings in a 22-6 record.
According to Long County athletic director Karen Swindell, the only people who will receive free entry into Saturday’s game are those personnel who have GHSA passes. Tickets are $7 apiece and go on sale at 3 p.m.
