The Long County High School baseball team found out Tuesday why Pierce County is ranked No. 3 in the GAPrepCountry/GACA Coaches poll.
The visiting Bears topped the Blue Tide, 11-0, in Ludowici to drop Long County to 0-3 in Region 2-AA.
“We played hard through the first four innings, but then in the fifth, we let the game get out of hand … (starting pitcher) Will Lowman from Pierce is a great pitcher, but I was disappointed that we didn’t put the ball in play more,” said Blue Tide head coach Brian Thomas.

Even though the team wasn’t very productive offensively, Thomas said did see some good defensive work from his squad.
“We did turn three double plays, and that was a bright spot defensively,” Thomas said.
Lowman got the win for Pierce County, while Shawn Mills picked up the loss for the Blue Tide.
“(Mills) threw well until the fifth, where a few defensive mistakes proved too costly,” Thomas said.
The leading batter for the Long County team was Cole Ray, who went 1-for-2 with a double.
Long County had a non-region matchup Wednesday in Claxton.
A full story on that game will be in Sunday’s Coastal Courier.
Today,  the Tide is back on the road again when they travel to Lyons to face Toombs County for another big region game at 5:45 p.m.
The Bulldogs come into the game with a 1-5 overall record and a region mark of 0-2.
Toombs County is averaging 3.3 runs a game while allowing 6.8. The Blue Tide are allowing and scoring 5.7 runs a night.
Last year, Toombs County swept the series from the Tide.
