Gas lines delay work on Savannah parkway

POSTED: March 12, 2012 2:25 p.m.

SAVANNAH — Workers are suspending construction on a major bypass in Savannah after crews twice cut into gas lines buried underground.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says work on the city’s Truman Parkway won’t resume until after agency officials meet with the road project’s general contractor and Atlanta Gas Light next week.

The Savannah Morning News reports that twice last week workers cut into gas lines that weren’t located by the service contractors use to avoid such damage during excavations.

The leaks Tuesday and Wednesday forced police to reroute traffic. One Savannah City Council member wants the city reimbursed for the cost.

The parkway links downtown Savannah with the city’s suburban south side.
