Some folks steal money, others cars, and some try to steal lawnmowers — or at least that is what two Hinesville men were charged with trying to do in Long County.
According to Long County Sheriff’s Department Det. Ty Smith, Joseph Daniel Wynn and Michael Cedric Berich, both 20, attempted to steal a John Deere lawnmower from Trinity Baptist Church in Long County this past Monday.
According to a report filed by LCSD Deputy Craig Nobles on Nov. 5, he responded to the call at about midnight.
After arriving on the scene, Pastor Timothy Parrish reported he had heard noises coming from the edge of the woodline at the rear of his residence.
Parrish said he then went outside and saw someone at the church. He then went to the church and saw Wynn driving a Jeep Cherokee that was pulling a black trailer.
Parrish said he approached Wynn to find out what he was doing on the church’s property, and Wynn told him he was working on his trailer lights and then drove away.
Parrish said he then saw the church’s lawnmower in the bushes where Wynn had been parked.
According to the report, Parrish had gotten the tag number from the vehicle and gave the information to the deputy. Nobles then called the tag number in with a description of the vehicle and the vehicle was pulled over by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department a short time later.
Nobles contacted Parrish and a second witness who had seen the vehicle leave the church and they identified Wynn as the man at the church.
In addition to Wynn being charged with the crime, Berich was apprehended near the scene on Lee Place Road and was arrested by Deputy Shane Middleton.
According to Smith, both men were charged with criminal attempt (felony) and appeared in Long County Magistrate court Nov. 6 before Judge Marie Milton.
Each man was given a $3,000 cash bond with a $6,000 property bond. Both posted bond.
