Bradwell Institute’s baseball team won two of its three games this week heading into today’s action.
On Monday, the Tigers traveled to Brunswick and beat the Pirates, 6-0, in a non-region game. On Tuesday, Bradwell added a Region 3-AAAAA win by downing Beach High, 12-1, at home, while on Wednesday, the Tigers rallied but fell to McIntosh County Academy, 7-6, in non-conference action at home.
In Wednesday’s heated battle, MCA arrived showing its ability to hit the ball and took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. BI took its at-bat but left two runners on base.
In the top of the second inning, MCA scored two more runs but the Tigers stopped a third Buccaneer from scoring. Tiger Mitch Rogers scooped up the ball on an infield play toward second, saw the runner headed home and made a throw to catcher Caleb Wells, who tagged the MCA player as he attempted to leap over Wells’ head.
In the bottom of the inning, Tiger Adam Corwin was walked to first and stole second. Matt Brown followed with a base hit. Corwin was able to steal third, and with runners at first and third, Xavier John hit an RBI double down the third-base line. Kyle Lannom walked and the Tigers had the bases loaded. Rogers hit a deep flyout to center, allowing Brown to tag third and head for home. Tiger Sage Sammons walked to give the Tigers runners on first and third. Jacob Dill hit a one-hopper to score a run. The Tigers closed the inning trailing, 4-3.
MCA scored a run in the top of third to extend its lead to 5-3. The Tigers went to work at the plate, starting with a single by Ryan Hall. With two outs, Brown got another base hit and John notched an RBI. Lannom loaded the bases with a hit and Rogers was walked to score a run and tie the game at 5-5. Sammons was walked to give the Tigers a 6-5 advantage, but the Buccaneers got the third out to close the inning.
MCA scored two more runs for the 7-6 win.
Tiger coach Rhett Hellgren was pleased by the way his team battled back. He said they’ve played well the past three games.
“I think this team believes in each other and trusts each other,” he said. “They are constantly giving each other encouragement and not letting each other get down after they make a mistake.”
Hellgren said that against Brunswick on Monday, the Tigers committed no errors. In that game, Mitch Rogers hit a three-run homer. Hellgren said Rogers also did an excellent job on the mound as the starter. He added that Dill did a great job coming out of the bullpen.
Against Beach High, Corwin started and got the win with Sammons coming in as relief.
The Tigers are 3-3 overall and 2-0 in Region 3-AAAAA and will host Camden County at 5 p.m. today.
