The Lady Highlanders soccer team played at home Tuesday against four-time state champion Frederica Academy and took down the crown holders, 3-0.
Eighth-grade goalkeeper Megan Higgason had five saves. Her sister, Kelsey Higgason, scored two goals for the Lady ’Landers, and Brooke Standard kicked in the final goal for the win.
“It was very exciting,” Lady ‘Landers coach Tom Sukaratana said. “Megan Gillon missed a one-on-one shot from 6 yards away, which would have given us an extra score, but it was thrilling.”
Sukaratana said he still wants to work on finishing ,as the girls made 23 attempts on goal during the match. The coach said Frederica made 12 attempts on goal.
“We were up, 1-0, at the half,” he said. “After the break Megan brought the ball back all the way from the back to score. It was a great team effort overall.”
The Lady ’Landers are 5-1 overall. Their lone loss was to Bulloch Academy last week (9-1). The girls are 3-0 in Region 3-AA.
On Monday, the girls head to Savannah to play Memorial Day School. On Tuesday, the squad hosts Georgia Christian at 4 p.m. On Friday, they have a 5 p.m. rematch with Bulloch Academy at home.
The Highlander boys were just a few miles down the street, where they lost to Frederica Academy in a baseball game Tuesday afternoon. The boys fell, 12-2.
Highlander Phillip Swindell walked three and struck out five batters. Jake Lee walked four and struck out seven batters in the loss.
FPCA is 1-4 overall and 1-4 in Region 2-AA.
Richard Lovelady and Swindell each had an RBI in the game. The boys play at 4 p.m. today at Robert Toombs Academy and will host Memorial Day at 4 p.m. next Tuesday. The Highlanders’ home games are at Joseph Miller Park.
In other FPCA news, Lady Highlander swimmer Maria McGovern performed solidly at the Easter Section Southern Zone swim meet March 15-18 in Greensboro, N.C.
McGovern shaved 2.06 seconds off her 100-meter freestyle and 0.35 seconds of her 50-meter freestyle. She finished eighth in the 200-meter freestyle.
The Coastal Georgia Aquatics team, which includes FPCA athletes, finished 15th at the meet out of 16 teams.
