Long County High School lost a disappointing game, 3-1, Monday to Claxton.
Ludowici fans were treated to a pitching duel between the Blue Tide’s Zack Harris and the Tigers’ Tanner Lee.
Through the first three innings, both pitchers were on fire and kept control, as batters were mowed down like grass. After 3 1/2 innings, the score was still nothing to nothing with only one hit allowed by Harris.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Tide’s lead off hitter Luke Golden was walked. A sacrifice bunt by John Christianson advanced Golden into scoring position.
Chase Rogers’ short hit was fielded, keeping Golden at second. With Jacob Turner at the plate, Golden was able to steal to third.
With two outs, Lee made one of his few mistakes for the night, throwing a high pitch that his catcher couldn’t bring down. Golden made it home. In the fifth inning, Harris struck out all three Claxton batters, and through five innings the Tide were on top, 1-0. Lee still had not allowed a hit, and Harris gave up one. In the top of the sixth, Harris began to slip, giving up four hits to the Tigers, resulting in three runs being scored.
Blue Tide head coach Brian Thomas saw his sophomore struggling and sent in John Christianson to try and pull out the save. Christianson managed to get the Tide out of the inning, but the Tide were unable to score when they were at bat.
In the top of the seventh, a hit allowed by the Blue Tide along with a errors resulted in the Tigers loading the bases with one out. But Christianson pitched smart, and the Tide made big defensive plays to escape the inning without giving up a score.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Tide’s Chase Rogers drew a walk from Lee, and there was a glimmer of hope. But on this night, the Claxton pitcher was just too tough. He retired the next three Blue Tide batters. Lee picked up the win, allowing one hit. Harris took the loss, but still pitched a solid game, allowing five hits through six innings.
With the non-region loss, Long  fell to 5-8 overall and remained 1-5 in Region 2-AA. On Tuesday, Long County faced Vidalia High School.
On Friday, the Tide are back on the road, this time at Jeff Davis High School for another 2-AA showdown. That game is in Hazlehurst and it begins at 6 p.m.
