Sandra Eichholz, head coach of the Liberty County High School Panthers men’s and women’s varsity tennis team, has returned from a five year sabbatical to coach her players toward success this spring.
Their season will commence with their first game at home against Calvary on Monday at 4 p.m.
In the meantime, Eichholz is working enthusiastically with her players to ensure they do not repeat the troubled season they had last year with former coach Bobby Evans.
“I’m trying to teach them fundamental tennis, teamwork and that meaningful practice is permanent,” Eichholz said. “For this year, I want to work with these kids on a kinesthetic level so they can be able to routinely hit a good backhand, forehand and serve.”
Eicholz said about 40 percent of her team has experience and a few of those players include seniors Colton Sells and Nicholas Radunske, sophomore Courtney Bush and standout freshman Tierra Sapp.
Among these players, the mood was optimistic and hopeful as they gear up with their new coach to win.
“A lot of us have been practicing since early October for this season,” Sells said. “We have a coach with five years of professional experience so we hope she’ll take us further than our last coach who just had some college experience.”
“I have been playing for four years now,” Radunske said. “I just want to keep improving and I want to make my last year a good one as I try to make it on the college level.”
Eichholz made a point of mentioning Sapp who she described as a “dynamo” of the girls team.
“I just want to keep developing as a player and I will do my part to help the team work together so we can have a good season,” Sapp said.
