Bradwell notches baseball win

POSTED: March 30, 2012 9:33 a.m.

The Bradwell Institute baseball team notched another Region 3-AAAAA win Tuesday by beating Groves, 8-1, in Garden City.
According to Tiger baseball coach Rhett Hellgren, his players had to dig deep in a tough game to get the win.
The Tigers struggled again at the plate, he said, and had to pull away from a 2-1 score in the middle innings.
“It has been a very difficult season so far with hitting,” Hellgren said. “We are working on it and will continue to work on it for the rest of the season. We really didn’t get going until the fifth inning when we squeezed twice for three runs.”
Hellgren said Adam Corwin and Xavier John put in the great squeezes that lifted the rest of the team.
“Adam had to squeeze a ball coming directly at his head, and it was so pretty to see it go down and get the run,” Hellgren said.
On the mound, Tiger pitcher Mitch Rogers started the game and pitched well in the beginning.
“But he suddenly had control problems and walked four batters, giving Groves their one run,” Hellgren said. “Jacob (Dill) came in and did a fantastic job giving up only two hits the rest of the way. He got the win. Jacob also had two hits and now is batting close to .600, which is outstanding.”
The Tigers are 6-6 overall and 5-2 in the region. They face No. 2 seed Benedictine at 5 p.m. today.
“The Benedictine game is huge for us,” Hellgren said. “They are currently in second place in the region, and it will be a huge test for us.  We will see their best pitcher, and I hope we can come out and hit the ball on the ground. It’s so important to get the ball on the ground.”
Hellgren added that if the Tigers can pitch a good game and hit the ball on the ground, they can be competitive even against the Cadets.
