FPCA’s girls’ soccer team is 7-1 after posting back-to-back wins by a combined score of 11-0 this week.
On Monday, the girls shut out Memorial Day, 7-0, in Savannah. On Tuesday, the girls downed Georgia Christian, 4-0, at St. James Field.
Co-captains Kelsey Higgason and Brooke Standard scored two goals each in Tuesday’s win, and goalkeeper Alliyah Wilson had three saves.
FPCA coach Tom Sukaratana was pleased to earn the victory but added that the girls could have played a bit better against Georgia Christian, especially in the first half.
“It’s been my experience that when you blow out a team 7-0 like we did at Memorial and then come back the next day and play another game, the players come out with a false sense of security and complacency,” he said. “We came out relaxed and not playing hard in the first half, and once you start missing shots it’s like quicksand and you start sinking.”
Going into the second half, the Georgia Christian game was knotted at 0-0, and the coach gave his girls a small pep talk. He asked them to go in strong and score within five minutes.
The girls listened, and within that time frame, Standard scored the first goal.
Within minutes Higgason followed suit. The defense added more pressure, and the Highlanders passed the ball more efficiently.
“We had better combinations in the second half,” Sukaratana said.
The Highlanders had 40 shots on goal against Georgia Christian, and Sukaratana added he still wants his squad to improve at finishing goals.
The girls have a tough game today when they host Bulloch Academy. Bulloch is the only team to hand the Lady ‘Landers a loss this season. The game starts at 5:30 p.m.
