Lady Tide in state playoffs

POSTED: March 10, 2007 5:10 a.m.
In 1980, “The Empire Strikes Back” was the number one grossing movie, President Ronald Reagan was just beginning his first term in office and the US Olympic Ice Hockey team won the gold medal.
It was also the last time the Long County girl’s basketball team made state. But tonight, the Lady Blue Tide will take on the Screven County Gamecocks, attempting to continue their comeback season.
The girls enter the state playoffs coming off a solid performance in the Region 2-AA Tournament in Baxley.
Saturday the Lady Tide finished in third place, after beating the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets 42-40. In the game, Brittany Mills had another solid outing with 4 steals, 7 assists and 8 points, while anchor Gentara Holmes netted over half of the Tide’s points with 22.
The Gamecocks, as they bring a 23-5 overall record into the state tournament, and are solid in all areas.
“Screven is big, strong, and fast, and their record shows just how good they are”, said Head Coach Julie Daffron.
The Lady Tide will be out matched on paper, but they will continue to play hard and aggressive, as they have all season. This resilience brought them back from a 0-6 start, to beat both Brantley County and Jeff Davis County in the Region 2-AA Tournament, and finish respectably in third place. Their lone loss in the tournament was to the eventual winner McIntosh County.
The Long County girls travel to Sylvania tonight to take on the Gamecocks. Tip off is at 6.
