Relaxing on the couch while watching a movie on DVD is a leisurely comfort many take for granted but can mean a lot for soldiers spending months at a rehabilitation clinic.
Last Veterans Day, Laurance Bashkin of New York spearheaded an idea with a few colleagues to bring a little consolation to soldiers in rehabilitation.
The consolation was in the form of DVDs.
The idea became DVDs4Vets and expanded to reach all veterans, not just those currently serving in the Middle East, allowing DVDs to be sent to hospitals and homes alike.
The organization is asking those who want to show their appreciation for veterans for DVD donations. Used and new DVDs are accepted.
DVDs can be sent to the donor’s nearest VA clinic or directly to the DVDs4Vets organization for distribution to veterans.
In a year’s time, the project has collected over 25,000 DVDs from people who agree that while a DVD may be a small token of thanks, it can make a big difference in the life of a veteran who may receive it.
The mission of DVDs4Vets is to “provide veterans who for any physical or economic reasons cannot obtain DVDs on their own” so no monetary donations are accepted.
To receive or donate DVDs, visit the organization’s Web site, www.dvds4vets.org or call (914) 835-3673.
