A day after suffering an 8-4 loss to Bradwell Institute, the Islands High School Sharks rebounded.
They beat the Liberty County Panthers, 5-2, in a non-region game at Panther field.
The Sharks scored a run in the first off an RBI by Austin Legget. The Panthers avoided a second run in the first when Deshaun Collins covered home plate after a wild pitch. He got there in time to tag out the runner and close the top of the inning.
During their at bat, Panther Antonio Smith walked and stole second and third base. Curtis Michalowicz also walked and stole second, but both were left on base when J.T. Evans popped out to center field for the third out.
Smith caught a line drive and Collins earned two strikeouts to keep the Sharks in the tank in the second.
The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the third when Gary Albertson hit a low ground ball, and Michalowicsz hit a one-hopper to  score Albertson. A Sharks error allowed the Panthers to take their first lead, 2-1.
Those two runs would be the Panthers’ last. In the top of the fourth the Sharks got a run off a sacrifice bunt. In the fifth, the Sharks took the lead and never looked back.
Deshaun Collins pitched five innings and Michalowicz pitched the final two.
The Panthers are 2-14 overall and 0-8 in Region 2A-AAAA. They were scheduled to host Ware County Tuesday and will host Glynn Academy at 6 p.m. Friday.
Junior varsity
In a junior-varsity game Saturday, the Panthers won, 10-3. Colby Rhea got the win, pitching a complete game. Rhea also picked off two runners at first. Jacari Roberts hit a three-run triple, Christian Ruff had two hits and Zachary Curry had a base hit.
It was the final game of the JV season, and coach Joel Moody said it was nice for the boys to finish on a high note.
