Liberty lost, 13-0, Tuesday afternoon to Region 2A-AAAA power Ware County. It took only five innings.
Ware’s aggressive hitters struck first, plating three runs in the top of the first inning with a pair of singles and a double.
Liberty went down in order in the bottom of the first. Ware added three more runs over the next two innings.
Panther shortstop Antonio Smith slapped a two-out double to the right center gap in the bottom of the third. That was the Panthers’ only hit. Smith also pulled off a double play for the Panthers in the top of the fifth inning.
Liberty pitcher Curtis Michaelowicz took the loss.
“The scoreboard isn’t really indicative of how we played,” Liberty coach Joel Moody said. “We did some things better today. We hit five balls hard at Ware’s third baseman, a true college prospect who has already signed with Georgia Perimeter.”
Ware is considered one of the better teams in the state. The Gators have only one loss in region play and are tied with Richmond Hill for the region lead.
Despite committing some errors and surrendering walks, Moody said his young ball club is improving.
“Tony Smith had a double for us and also turned a double play,” the coach said. “We also fielded the ball a little better and did a better job of hitting the cutoff.”
Moody said he has nominated Smith to play in the Southeast Georgia Coaches All-Star
game.
Liberty falls to 0-9 in Region 2A-AAAA and 2-15 overall. The Panthers will be back on the diamond at 6 p.m. Friday for a region game against Glynn Academy. Senior varsity baseball players also will be honored.
In other Panther news, the boys’ soccer team hosted Glynn Academy on Tuesday and lost, 7-1. The Panthers are 2-8-1 overall and 2-7 in the region. The Lady Panthers also fell to the Red Terrors, 4-0. They are 2-9-1 overall and 2-8 in the
region.
