Hinesville native Gary Guyton signed a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins Tuesday morning. The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins agreed to terms with Guyton on Friday. But according to Guyton’s NFL agent Richard Kopelman of KLASS Sports, Guyton made it official Tuesday.
Guyton spent a week in Miami, starting April 9 and worked out with the Dolphins.
“Gary is extremely excited to join the Dolphins,” Kopelman said. “With a new coaching staff in Miami, the Dolphins will be incorporating 4-3 and 3-4 defensive schemes. Gary will be competing for a starting linebacker role.”
Guyton spent the past four years with the New England Patriots, but saw playing time dwindle last season. That prompted him to seek opportunities elsewhere.
For the Patriots, Guyton played in 60 games with 32 career starts. He tallied 150 solo tackles and 79 assists, defended 15 passes, had three interceptions, forced a fumble and scored a touchdown.
According to the Herald, Guyton is expected to compete for a starting linebacker job against Koa Misi, but also figures as a backup and special teams contributor if he’s unable to earn a starting spot.
Terms of his contract are not being disclosed.
