Undersecretary of Army visits Stewart

POSTED: March 10, 2007 5:10 a.m.
Under Secretary of the Army Pete Geren had a closed door visit with 3rd Infantry Division Commander Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch at Fort Stewart Thursday.
“He popped in for a visit,” Fort Stewart Public Information Chief Kevin Larson said. “He didn’t talk to any troops. He talked with the CG and went on a windshield tour.”
The under secretary was on the post most of the day and departed Thursday afternoon. No other details about the visit were released.
This was Geren’s second trip to one of Georgia’s Army bases in less than 90 days. He paid a visit to Fort Benning on Dec. 15. During that visit Geren administered the oath of re-enlistment to several soldiers.
Secretary of the Army Francis J. Harvey made his first trip to Fort Stewart in June 2006. The purpose of his visit was to see if plans made at the Army level are working out on the ground where the soldiers are, he said.
Geren is Harvey’s senior civilian advisor on the effective and efficient functioning of the Army. He became the Under Secretary of the Army on Feb. 21, 2006.
Among his responsibilities are oversight for acquisition and financial management. He also assists and advises on legislative affairs and public affairs activities.
Geren’s job also includes providing oversight of policy, planning, coordination, and execution of matters related to manpower and personnel, logistics, installations, operations and plans. He was acting Secretary of the Air Force prior to his current job.
