The Highlanders made up for errors and a slow start to come back up from an 8-3 deficit, force extra innings and earn an 11-10 victory against David Emanuel Academy Tuesday afternoon at Joseph Miller Park.
FPCA’s Matt Lormis hit a two-run single to tie the game 10-10 in the bottom of the seventh to earn extra innings. Richard Lovelady came in and closed out the game. Lovelady entered with two runners on and was able to get out without allowing a run.
In the bottom of the ninth, shortstop Rickey Gilliard hit a shot into the right-center gap with the bases loaded to score the winning run.
“David Emanuel is a quality opponent,” FPCA coach Bruce Green said. “They do a very good of making strong contact to put the ball in play. Even though they are GISA Division 1 and we are Division 2, they are a good team. They are in first place in their region.”
Despite the slow start, Green credited his team with working back into the game.
“Jake Lee came in and gave us six good innings on the mound, and Richard Lovelady did a great job coming in and closing out the game,” Green said.
FPCA sprayed 12 hits, including a three-run homer by Phillip Swindell. Lormis was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Gilliard was 2-for-5 and batted in two runs.
FPCA moved to 9-7 on the season and was schedluled to host Memorial Day School for senior day Thursday. Read all about the Memorial game in Sunday’s Courier.
