The Long County High School baseball team defeated Groves High School in a tough game in Savannah on Thursday.
They closed out the season Friday with a 5-8 loss to Vidalia High School. More on that game will be reported later.
Thursday’s game was the second one Long County and Groves played this season, and the Tide swept the two-game series. Though the Blue Tide did pull out the win, they had to score two runs in the top of the seventh inning and then shut down the Rebels in the bottom of the inning to secure the 6-5 victory.
The starting pitcher for Long County was Gage Kasperian. Chase Rogers closed and picked up the win. Long’s leading hitters were Austin Simmons, who went 3-for-3, Rogers 2-for-3 and Shane DeLoach 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Blue Tide head coach Brian Thomas said, “I thought that we needed to play with more energy early in the game. However, I was really proud of the way we came back in the seventh inning ... that showed some maturity.
“I was really proud of Austin Simmons’ efforts at the plate. He did a great job of hitting the ball hard all three times up. I’m also really happy for Chase Rogers. He did a great job shutting down two Groves rallies at the end of the game.”
The Blue Tide finished the season to 8-18.
