Brunswick finds money to raise sunken shrimp boat

POSTED: May 4, 2012 11:05 a.m.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Authorities in Brunswick, who have been trying to figure out what to do about a shrimp boat that sank nearly five months ago, say they have found enough funds to raise the vessel.

Removing sunken shrimp boats has become a costly problem for the city, partly because boat owners often don't have the money to raise vessels that sink at the city dock.

City Manager Bill Weeks said this week the plan is to use a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant to raise the Bossy Betty, which sank on Dec. 7. Weeks said the vessel's owner left it, and hasn't been located.

The Florida Times-Union reports (http://bit.ly/ILjdMS) that a Blackshear firm has told city officials that it can do the job for $27,900.
