Students from Walker Middle School in Long County recently competed in their annual field-day event. Among the winning classes were (clockwise, from left) Paul Austin and his sixth-grade class; Kim Pucciariello and her fourth-grade class and Helen Young and her winning fifth-grade class.

Students from Walker Middle School recently competed in their annual field-day event.
The competition included traditional events such as the 50-yard dash and 100 dash and also included events such as the leap-frog race, the dizzy-bat race and the cup-stacking competition. The final event of the day was the tug-of-war.  
The students who took part in the field-day events were in fourth, fifth and sixth grades.
Taking home the first-place banner for the fourth grade was Kim Pucciariello’s class. Angel Kicklighter and Tiffany Popham’s classes tied for the runner-up spot, and Sandy Turner’s class rounded out the top three.
In fifth grade, Helen Young’s class took first place, while Donna Sertich’s class got the second-place honor and Candice Mixon’s class took the third spot.
In sixth grade, Paul Austin’s class finished on top, with Mary Ann Durrence’s class being the runner-up and Jennifer Townsend’s class rounding out the top three.
Other teachers with classes in the competition included Jenny Alfirov, Melissa Beaver, Karen Harrell, Rebecca Oakes, Beth Vandervort, Lora Gay, Jennifer Knope, Misty Rutherford, Megan Sierra, Suzanne Smith, Bonnie Camp, Kristin Sapp, Lydia Simmons, Kim Stock and Whitney Tyre.
