POSTED: June 25, 2012 11:33 a.m.

It’s concert time for the Liberty County Community Area Mass Choir.

At 7 p.m. June 30, the choir will present a special patriotic concert, “The Home of the Brave,” at the First United Methodist Church in Hinesville.

“‘The Home of the Brave’ concert is a musical which celebrates America’s courage and commitment,” Mass Choir founder and director Ronald Calhoun said. “It is a free concert in support of our military members in the area.”

The musical was created by Deborah Craig-Claar and arranged and orchestrated by David T. Clydesdale.

“‘The land of the free and the home of the brave.’ These last two phrases of the national anthem evoke a sense of pride, determination, and admiration for this country,” Calhoun said. “Her freedom, preserved by many generations of men and women of courage, is the subject of many songs. Deborah Craig-Claar and David T. Clydesdale have blended these classic patriotic favorites with newly composed works to bring you ‘The Home of the Brave.’”

Calhoun continued: “Boldly patriotic, ‘The Home of the Brave’ focuses on the blessings given us throughout our nation’s history. The musical grounds itself in the actual events of history with narration that creatively integrates direct quotations from the diaries of Lewis and Clark, the Declaration of Independence and the oath of citizenship.

“Additionally, the musical arrangement includes recordings of actual speeches by Gen. John J. Pershing, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and President Ronald Reagan.

“The concert is composed of music that honors active and inactive members of the military branches, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Citizenship Day.

“The Liberty County Community and Area Mass Choir has been called an ‘ecumenical miracle’ by civic and community leaders.

“In January 2003, local musicians joined together to provide an outlet for singers in Liberty County and the surrounding area. The Mass Choir’s first program for the community was the ‘100 Voices for Easter’ concert that was held in April 2003 in Hinesville.

“Since then, the Mass Choir has performed many community concerts that included ‘Handel’s Messiah’ at Fort Stewart and concerts at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church and the First United Methodist Church in Hinesville. Other programs included patriotic concerts in Hinesville and at Fort Pulaski National Monument, the annual mayor’s Thanksgiving service, the ‘I’m Amazed’ concert at the Main Post Chapel at Fort Stewart, ‘Fire In The Choir’ concert at the Marne Chapel on Fort Stewart, where we performed music of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, and the community covenant signing held at Fort Stewart in 2008.”

The Mass Choir has programs for singers and musicians including an ensemble, quartet, trio, soloist, instrumentalist and community chorus that represents the Mass Choir at special programs such as the Warrior’s Walk Ceremony, Christmas-tree lighting and more.
