Liberty delegation meets with state leaders

POSTED: March 13, 2007 5:15 a.m.
ATLANTA — The City of Hinesville, the Liberty County Board of Commissioners, and the Liberty County Development Authority recently hosted key state legislators at a legislative reception in Atlanta.
The Liberty County delegation presented several significant items to key state legislators, including President Pro Tem of the Senate Eric Johnson, Senate Majority Leader Tommie Williams, Senate Appropriations Chair Jack Hill, House Majority Leader Jerry Keen, House Minority Leader Dubose Porter, Minority Whip Carolyn Hughley, Rep. Buddy Carter, and Liberty County’s representative, Al Williams.
Both U.S. Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson were reprsented at the event.
Locally, Mayor Tom Ratcliffe, Councilman Charles Frasier and City Manager Billy Edwards represented the City of Hinesville; Chairman John McIver, Vice-Chairman Kenny Fussell, and commissioners Pat Bowen, Connie Thrift and Eddie Walden; and County Administrator Joey Brown represented the Liberty County Board of Commissioners; and Chairman Allen Brown, board member Jeff Arnold, Chief Executive Officer Ron Tolley, and Director of Marketing Anna Chafin represented the development authority.
Local leadership requested funding for a new DFCS building, as well as an additional year of state assistance for the Diversity Health Center. In addition, the group addressed several critical transportation needs.
Rep. Al Williams, who suggested organizing the event, said, “I believe the event was well received by all the legislators who attended. We should feel quite fortunate to have had four of the six writers of the budget present.
“The attendees seemed engaged and provided positive feedback on the format of the event, as well as appeared receptive to the issues we presented.  It also certainly helps that my legislative colleagues from the local delegation are some of the most powerful in the general assembly.”
This event was the first of its kind hosted by Liberty County leadership for key state legislators. The Heritage Bank, First Citizens Bank, and Joe Tanner & Associates also helped sponsor the event.
