The Waldo Pafford Elementary School Kids Care Club recently put together holiday gift bags and presented them to the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 46 as a “Bringing Good Moments” project.
All the students who participated are children of parents who are deployed with the military.
Dr. Deloris Mitchell, WPE counselor, meets with the group every other week to discuss the deployment and to work on coping skills.
The idea behind the event was “helping yourself by helping others,” according to Mitchell.
“I decided it would be a way for them (the students) to give back,” she said.
DAV members received the gift bags with smiles and thanks.
“We can appreciate (your) thoughtfulness, of thinking of others at this time,” DAV Commander Garlon Penland said.
Ted Harris, a DAV member, had a question-and-answer session with the students, allowing them to share how they felt about their parents being away from home.
“That’s the sacrifice you have to make, sharing your father,” Harris said to one student.
The veterans distributed forget-me-not flowers made by veterans and flags.
Harris also provided the students with a brief block of instruction on how to “show respect for your flag.”
The students and the veterans enjoyed German chocolate cake and punch at the conclusion of the event.
