Late 3rd ID soldier identified

POSTED: December 27, 2007 5:02 a.m.
A Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield soldier found dead in his car Saturday morning by the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police was identified Wednesday night.
According to information released by the Fort Stewart Public Affairs Office, the deceased soldier is Sgt. Hawanta Houston, a heavy equipment mechanic who was assigned to the 110th Transportation Company, 260th Quartermaster Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Brigade.
The 32-year-old is a native of Hollywood, Fla. who joined the Army in May 2000 and became a member of the 3rd ID in August 2006.
Police found Houston in his fire-destroyed Chevy Tahoe in the parking lot of the Clover Village Apartments in Savannah around 3:30 a.m.
Investigators have reportedly determined the cause of the car fire to be an electrical malfunction.
An autopsy performed Monday at the GBI crime lab concluded Houston died from smoke inhalation with no signs of foul play.
The incident is still being investigated by the SCMPD.
