Judy Carol Yonkosky, 37, of Jesup drowned at about 1 a.m. Friday while swimming in the Altamaha River in Long County, according to Long County Sheriff's Department Det. Ty Smith.
Yonkosky's husband, John, was with her at the time of the incident.
Smith said John Yonkosky told authorities he and his wife had gone to a restaurant in Jesup on Thursday evening, and then took their son home.
Then, wanting to be alone, they decided to go skinny-dipping at Johnson Landing.
Yonkosky said that while swimming, his wife went under the water. He also said he tried to save her, but she wasn't breathing when he got her to shore and he couldn't get her to respond.
He then said he tried to call for help with his cell phone, but it was wet and would not work.
Then, he said he went to the road and tried to get help, but no one would stop. He then went to his friend's house, Tommy Brantley, where police and EMS personnel were called.
Smith said Brantley then went back to the landing with Yonkosky.
The incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning.
