For Long County residents who wish to avoid the election-day crowds Tuesday, today is the final day to cast ballots in the early and advanced voting.

The voting period ends at 5 p.m., according to the Georgia secretary of state’s website.

County board of elections Chairwoman Vanessa Cunningham said turnout has been good.

“So far, we have had a great turnout for voting, and hopefully it will continue to be good on the 31st, too,” she said.

Nine local incumbents are being challenged in the general primary, so a high voter turnout is expected to carry over.

County sheriff is the only Long County race that will not be decided in the primary, since all other contested races are on the Democratic ticket.

In the other countywide races, incumbent superior court clerk Frank Middleton faces off against Sherry Long, while incumbent Tax Commissioner Becky Fowler takes on Deona Carter.

Also in the soil and water conservation supervisor race, incumbent Cecil Stafford is being challenged by Ben Benton.

In the county commissioner races, 1st District incumbent David Richardson is being challenged by Gerald Blocker, 2nd District incumbent Wallace Shaw is facing Robert Long, and District 5 incumbent Bobby Walker up against Dwight Gordon.

For board of education, District 2 incumbent Dempsey Golden is facing Dr. Carolyn Williamson and District 4 incumbent Linda DeLoach is being challenged by Janet Watford.
