Hinesville native Gary Guyton reported July 27 to the first day of the Miami Dolphins’ training camp looking to fight for a starting linebacker position against Koa Misi.
It will be a tough battle for the Bradwell Institute alumnus and former New England Patriot.
On day one of camp, according to reports in the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel, Misi looked impressive stepping in front of a pass from quarterback Matt Moore for an interception on a possible touchdown play.
The reports said Misi seems to be adjusting well to the new 4-3 defensive scheme.
That same day, Guyton dropped a pick on a pass by quarterback David Garrard.
On day three of camp, the team’s first day in full pads, quarterback Ryan Tannehill had two passes deflected, one of which Guyton nabbed for a pick. reporter Tony Lopez Jr. said Misi is excellent in run support and may be the starter while he predicted the top three backups to be Guyton, rookie Joshua Kaddu and Jason Trusnik.
“Guyton is a versatile player with exceptional speed for the position, but lacks the instincts and physical style to be any kind of competition for Koa Misi at the (strong-side linebacker position),” Lopez wrote. “He will come in handy as a utility player at all three spots and coverage specialist to spell (Karlos) Dansby and (Kevin) Burnett.
