As a cop’s daughter, I’m more supporting of police officers than most. I appreciate the work they do for the community and individuals. That’s probably why I think National Night Out is such a great idea.

For those who don’t know, National Night Out is a fun, family friendly event put on annually all over the country to encourage friendliness among neighbors and give communities a chance to find out more about their local police department and police officers.

I’ve noticed many people aren’t particularly fond of police officers or are overly critical of law enforcement. I think this night provides a great opportunity to get to know officers as regular people and to gain a better understanding of the importance of fighting crime and keeping the law.

This year’s National Night Out has been rescheduled to Aug. 10, from 5-9 p.m. on Central Avenue in Hinesville. Thursday evening’s storms postponed it. Local vendors, games and prizes will be available throughout the evening.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend this year’s night out due to a family emergency that has me posted in Iowa for a while, but I strongly urge you to take the time to stop by the event to check it out. Take a moment to thank the local law enforcement and have some fun with people in the community while you’re at it.

In the meantime, I’ll be here in Iowa hoping for some of the rain Georgia’s been getting and supporting this local law enforcement by doing what I can to help my family in their time of need.
